The realization - through development and design - of a working multidisciplinary system for a specific customer, that meets the agreed requirements from the relevant stakeholders in the total life cycle of the product (= scope), within the agreed time and budget.
Role and responsibilities
Performs, under the direction of the Lead Systems Engineer, the system engineering activities within a project, i.e. gives substance to Requirements management, System design, Architecture, System implementation, Integration, Verification and Validation. Models and designs design control modules as part of the overall system. Makes technical decisions, provides risk list, including as input for the project plan.
Main responsibilities
Technical planning:
- Estimate in advance and plan the main lines of work of oneself at (sub)project level
- Lead Systems Engineer provided with input and substantiation during the project regarding progress of work compared to planning
Requirements management:
- Supporting the Lead Systems Engineer and Project Manager in working out the requirements, drawing up Requirements and possible limitations with regard to the entire scope of the project and the product to be designed at the customer and other relevant stakeholders (external).
System design:
Responsible for balancing all system design aspects (function, cost, interfaces, quality and reliability), in order for the system to work as required at integral and detailed design levels. Provides work breakdown, definition of deliverables and work packages, ensures the technical quality of the design:
- Elaboration of the design solution in, among other things, a design documentation
- Elaboration of the logical decomposition of the functions and technical components (HW & SW)
- Elaboration of the engineering work in work-breakdowns
- Be aware of the technical risks, interfaces and technical dependencies between different modules or disciplines and act accordingly
- Naming considerations and choices made in the chosen concept based on the (often conflicting) requirements and constraints
- Taking responsibility for the correct technical quality of the design (design reviews etc.)
Design Control Modules:
Responsible for designing a control module, testing this module in the total system and documenting the design, requirements and testing.
Product realization:
- Realizes the product implementation (e.g. by building a Functional Model)
- Provides input to the Risk Management File and the Design FMEA, further develops the DFMEA under the direction of the Lead Systems Engineer
- Builds, together with other engineers, a product integration environment, defines integration tests and performs them.
- Further elaborates the product verification in a test specification, performs system tests and reports them in a test report. Can support in performing tests at external test houses.
- Further develops design and test for production (e.g. defining acceptance tests in production).
Technical documentation
Ensure that the above activities are properly documented and that the structure and substantiation of the design is also in order in the documentation
| What do we expect from you?
Hard skills:
- Broad technical basis and insight.
- Experience with MATLAB, Simulink and preferably Dspace
- Good command of workmanship system design and development
- Specific for Medical: knowledge of relevant standards and Safety Risk management
- Experience in translating Customer Needs into smart Requirements
- Experience with structured testing.
Soft skills
- Clear communication: dares to ask questions, by asking and indicating when something is not feasible. Is able to communicate with stakeholders inside and outside the organization at different levels.
- Analytical thinking: has a helicopter view, but can also switch in abstraction level, sees connections.
- Pro-active and flexible attitude; can also think outside of his own areas of responsibility, can deal with changing insights, comes up with solutions to any problems and does not wait.
- Knows his way around the organization if additional knowledge is needed.
- Being able to make adequate and conscious (or not) choices in every phase of the project
Profile System Engineer:
At least three years of work experience. A completed Master of Science or PhD in Control Systems Engineering
Place in the organization:
The System Engineer has an internal and external business-oriented focus, has customer contact, works closely with the Project Manager and the other Engineers within the project and reports to the MSE / ME / SE / EE Group leader and possibly the Manager Engineering.
